The International Book Fair in Monterrey ended, it was a great experience for the whole Opinión 51 team. I was at times in the stand that we placed in the media area, I talked with many people, some already subscribed to Opinión 51 and others just getting located. The conversation was open, we talked about everything, we shared points of view but there was a visit that marked me the most, Constanza and her mother.
Constanza is 21 years old and is studying a career focused on energy, we talked about Rosanety Barrios, one of our columnists, energy expert and concerned about global warming. We discussed several angles of the same topic and she told me that in the short term she wanted to be close to politics to promote public policies to improve the state of renewable energies.
While I was listening to her, López Obrador crossed my mind, as well as fossil fuels and all the backward steps we have taken during this six-year term... Yes, we need you Constanza -I thought- because we need Mexico to recover time, to go into the future with renewable energies and that the public policies you manage to promote change the country's energy course.
But then I thought, is politics really a good environment for Constanza? It is a harmful environment. López Obrador's good intentions have not been enough to break with something that has become systematic, starting with corruption and impunity.
We continued talking and my reasoning went in parallel... What is the best place for Constanza? 21 years old. What a hope it would be in politics, but I have little faith in the future because of the environment. Abroad and/or in private industry? Maybe, maybe from there I will be able to do more for the country, for the world.
I don't know, in time, it's a coin flip. Then I kept thinking about all the youth, about all the people who are in their twenties and who have to make decisions for the future. A totally uncertain future, full of uncertainty, seen from my thirties. I don't know what it will look like from my mom's sixties. Is hope still the same? I was filled with more questions than answers.
Almost until the end of the conversation, her mom accused her, that she had a mess on her couch (the truth is that I also had it at some point when I lived at my mom's house and it stressed me to see it like that but also gave me infinite laziness to fix it) but the only thing I did was to tell her a story I had read in some media, After reading it, I talked to Fernando and we agreed that the house may have a certain level of disorder because of the day to day, but the dining room should always be clean, because it is the first thing we see when we cross the door when we get home and that gives a certain sense of peace.
Constanza fixed her couch and sent me a picture via Instagram. It made my day.
I close with the armchair, because it was the story that brought me back to the here and now, I had already gone several futures ahead thinking about the different Constanzas that will go through the changes of life. Today is 21 years old, it is normal to have a messy chair and a chaos in the decisions.
Constanza: don't go into politics. There are many other angles from where you can contribute and make great changes. I will not get into discussing whether politics is good or bad, just my intuition tells me that it is not for you, because you have a much bigger and warrior soul to fly higher. In the end it is your decision.
In time.
