Few are those who accept their mistakes; in these times of politics we are used to hearing that the fault lies with others, before past and present mistakes are accepted in the same person.

The first week of December, Rommel Pacheco, director of CONADE, had a first approach with athletes belonging to the unknown Mexican Swimming Federation, most of them medalists and divers who have competed in the Olympic Games.

Taking this step was surely not easy, first, because there are athletes who are a bit suspicious of the now head of the governing body of sports in Mexico and second, because of the strained relationship that Ana Gabriela Guevara left behind in CONADE.

This first approach served to smooth out those differences, to listen to the divers whose scholarships were withdrawn because they did not want to "align"; Rommel Pacheco silenced the voices that mentioned that the return of the scholarships was conditioned to not continuing with the litigation against CONADE, as we commented in the column addressed to Pacheco Marrufo, he lived a similar situation on the road to Tokyo 2020.

"They are in their right, they are not asked to desist because since I arrived at CONADE I found circumstances that have affected several of them," said Rommel in a statement that was uploaded through CONADE's social networks.

This is not the only meeting that the new head of CONADE has had in his attempt to solve the situation of high performance sports in Mexico.

He has already had talks with Marijosé Alcalá, president of the Mexican Olympic Committee; with deputies that make up the Youth and Sports Committee; he has had talks with the Directors of Sports of Tabasco and Tamaulipas, among others, a CONADE open to dialogue is what several athletes have requested and almost a month after the beginning of his administration, he has not set aside one of his first proposals.

In the first place, it is not possible to promise a future in which an excessive number of medals will be won in the Games. Those who make up the upper echelons of sports in our country are clear that promising does not impoverish, but that the reality of the four years that the Olympics last (the period between the Olympic Games and the one that follows) is hard work, not only for the athletes, but also for the directors who must go in the same direction and leave aside the famous tug-of-war.

What could be a reality is that, if communication and teamwork continue to flow in the same direction, we could have an accurate projection in terms of the number of medals that will be sought in Los Angeles 2028, there are those who are now daring to give a number of 10 medals, taking into account that Mexico is a power in Flag Football and this sport will make its debut in the next Summer Olympic Games.

Time will prove Rommel and Marijosé right; for now, small, firm steps have been taken towards the construction of a future that seems to be promising for Mexican sport.
