THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED IN THE OPINION 51 DUELS AT FIL MONTERREY
Is AMLO's time up? Should we keep talking about one man? Is he building or destroying? Is the 4T a failure? These and other questions were asked by Sabina Berman and Ivabelle Arroyo in the Opinion 51 duels at the Monterrey International Book Fair.
For Sabina, having left behind the neoliberal governments that privatized services and handed over the country's assets to businessmen is the first great advance. There are pending issues, yes, but the great change of this era is not in the hands of politicians, but in the hands of women who fight against the patriarchal and sexist systems of this country, she said. This time will be remembered for that; then, there will be the continuity of this political project that Claudia Sheinbaum will surely lead -she predicts- When you leave the neoliberal system you start to feel the control of those who forbid you to think differently and demand you to return to the gear of the powerful, of those who plundered the country; it is then when it is possible to see how wrong we were in a political and economic structure that only accentuated inequality, she pointed out.
Ivabelle Arroyo said that " AMLO has not run out of time for the float to turn into a pumpkin", but it is already 11:30 at night, enough time to take out the garbage, finish works and try to win the story, perhaps, the most difficult thing.
Perhaps there is less inequality, she said, but because there are more poor people and less middle class. For Ivabelle, Claudia Sheinbaum may be a great researcher, but in her opinion, the future of the country cannot be entrusted to a woman of science, but to strong powers that give balance to the Executive.
Is all propaganda disinformation?
On the topic of political communication, Jaina Pereyra and Laisha Willkins discussed why politicians have such a bad reputation; what to do to rebuild that image and how to demand better representatives from citizens.
Not all successful campaigns result in successful governments, they agreed. And not everything that comes out of politicians' mouths is a lie, but communication techniques have been abused to avoid conveying viable promises.
"Do not vote for whoever promises you the most things, but for whoever has delivered the best results prior to his or her candidacy; analyze legislative or government results," Laisha said at the meeting.
The air was left with reflections such as: What can be done by citizens to have better politicians and rulers? How to achieve a maturing of voters' criteria in order to better analyze before deciding? Where will the trend in political communication be heading?
These great encounters closed the Duels Opinion 51 series at the Monterrey Book Fair.
