In our fairytale country, unless you have spent the last week sleeping like Snow White, you will surely have heard of Doña Carlota, or as the networks have nicknamed her #AbuelitaVengadora or #AbuelitaSicaria.
There are versions and controversy about the motives, but in general, it is understood that the lady went to confront people who invaded a house belonging to her daughter and when they refused to leave, she pulled out a gun and shot, killing two men and wounding a minor. All of this is documented in a video.
My surprise when the news reached me has been far surpassed by the response of a Mexico in favor of the #AbuelitaJusticiera, fed up with crime and the inaction of the authorities in charge of enforcing the law and defending citizens.
Personally, I cannot justify an act of violence that ends the lives of two human beings, even if it was in reaction to another illegality. Despite the fact that we are in the worst security and crime crisis we have experienced in recent times, plagued by incompetence, corruption, incapacity and apathy on the part of all levels of the police and judiciary, I believe that taking justice into our own hands -although sometimes it feels like it- would turn us into the very thing we are fighting against.
However, I admit that I have followed with an almost folkloric morbid curiosity the way most people in the networks continue to react to this case. Not since Rubi's XV have I seen the country turn on an event in this way. Everyone has an opinion and does not hesitate to express it.
There are multiple posts on the social network X with provocative questions such as Doña Carlota, hero or criminal? Or, Who else is in favor of Doña Carlota taking Omar García Harfush's place? I can't help but wonder what a Dutchman, a Chilean or a Buddhist would think when reading the answers that, in the vast majority of cases -I'm talking about 9 out of 10-, support and even applaud the lady.
I allow myself, because I can't not do it, to share some of the most memorable ones:
-Yes! better than Harfush
-...and to have assistants to help him finish faster.
-Starting with Sinaloa
-For Human Rights
-Best for @ClaudiaShein substitute, has more 0v2Ri0s.
-Bukele to make her security minister
-Coppel and Elektra are already looking for Coppel and Elektra for portfolio recovery.
-He is better than the candidates for judgeships.
-All support! We should take up a collection for his legal proceedings.
We Mexicans are famous for laughing at death, perhaps it is our way of disguising our fear of dying, our refusal to say goodbye to our loved ones, or an ancestral wisdom that for many indicates that this is not the end. We also make fun of authority and, historically and in many cases, it has been derisory. This very Mexican character has been showing off in a big way in the "Carlota N" case.
Doña Carlota not only has the obvious hashtags, countless creative memes or videos with artificial intelligence in which she is armed with a machine gun, but the most Mexican of all: her own corrido and even a piñata with her likeness.
