Next year brings radical changes, and among them, the regulation of digital platforms promoted by Claudia Sheinbaum.
Although it is presented to us as an improvement, the reality is very different. Thousands of drivers and delivery drivers in this country will be severely affected. Yes, the plan offers social security, but at a cost that many of us are not willing to pay: the loss of the job flexibility we value so highly.
Those of us who work on platforms are independent. We choose our routes, schedules and decisions. If something makes us feel insecure, we have the freedom to cancel. This model not only gives us income, but also autonomy. With the proposed changes, we would lose key incentives that today allow us to increase our weekly earnings. We would become employees, subordinates, with fixed schedules and less control over our lives.
For many women like me, the flexibility of this model is invaluable. It allows us to take care of the home, to be present at crucial moments for our children and to adapt to their needs. Will we be able to continue to count on this essential benefit? Many of us are mothers and fathers at the same time, without support networks. When a child is sick, we know we can take a day or two off without fear of losing our income. Being subordinate would take that away from us.
The impact will not only be economic, but also emotional. The time we can spend with our families today will be drastically reduced. The most valuable thing about this model is being taken away from us: the freedom to decide how and when we work.
Please open spaces to hear our voices. It is not enough to talk to the high command of the platforms. Talk to us, who day in and day out contribute to the functioning of this city. Our work not only moves people, but keeps a society going that depends on our services. We deserve to be heard.
