Let's talk about height. The average height of human beings varies according to region and socio-environmental conditions. However, in general terms, at a global level, women measure on average between 160 and 165 centimeters and men between 170 and 175 centimeters. According to a study published in PLOS Genetics, the average height of Mexican women is 158 centimeters and that of Mexican men is 167 centimeters, up to 10 centimeters less than that of North Americans, a fact that surprises no one. What is of concern is that in Mexico more than 1.1 million children are below the expected height for their age. When is it simple genetics and when should it be considered a growth disorder that should be treated?
Let's start by understanding the basic elements of healthy growth in children. Growth in height and stature occurs from birth until the famous "growth plate closure" which occurs at approximately 14 to 18 years of age. In general, earlier in girls than in boys. Pediatricians have an established methodology to "predict" height based on age and family history; however, other factors play an important role in height, particularly nutrition, frequent physical activity and sleep: it is very important that children sleep at least 8 hours continuously, because growth hormone is usually secreted naturally in the body at night and with deep sleep. Seeing the pediatrician periodically to confirm that there is adequate progression of growth and development is essential.
So how do you define that a person, particularly in infancy, is not growing at the expected rate and at what point should height be a concern for parents?
