This article was published two and a half years ago in El Economista. I came across it today and, as the President continues to harass the Judiciary, I thought it pertinent to remember that he not only has a short sight before a judge but before the very definition of justice in a democratic regime. I bring it now, as it is, to this space.
....
On January 28*, a damned private individual asked the Judiciary to take his side with an injunction. He demanded that a judge protect him against the decision of the political authorities, who asked all citizens to defend the nation.
That particular damned was named Jesús Zapata and that January was January 1910. The act before which he sought amparo was a call to fight in the Mexican Army, a call that was for his brother, the celebrated Emiliano.
