To spy means to snoop without permission, to rummage without the right to do so, to look for information in order to a) boycott the plans of the spied subjects or b) extort compromising information. This, in general terms, applies to criminals, enemies, opponents or friends. Spying is a lowly act that serves to intimidate or obtain advantages.

In a war context, the limits of espionage are blurred; almost anything can be used to deceive, but in a democratic context, the limits of espionage are very clear: it is illegal, it violates human rights and it is difficult to use it as evidence before a judge, even if it was supported by a court order.
