As of 2018, we celebrate Education Day, a fundamental human right, on January 24. This month is even more special to me as it is also the anniversary of STEM+ Movement.
A dream that started in 2017 with the goal of promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education to close gaps and solve the great challenges of humanity.
Many years ago, thanks to a coaching process, I discovered that as a child I dreamed of being a teacher and teaching mathematics. Since 2000 I started a science outreach initiative and I learned that my superpower is the love of knowledge and that is how I dared to launch Movimiento STEM+. Have you discovered your superpower?
STEM Education is an urgent and relevant cause to be addressed as developing STEM competencies (critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, communication, collaboration, data literacy, digital literacy and computer science) and social-emotional skills (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and decision making) are the pathway for young people to successfully meet the challenges of the future.
We have focused mainly on women, as we believe in their great potential and that they have not traditionally been reflected in STEM areas.
I am proud that over the last seven years, in the STEM+ Movement we have consolidated an intervention model with a systemic approach and a network of alliances made up of people, companies and institutions that have joined this great cause and thanks to them we have promoted long-term projects that have had an impact on the educational policy of our country.
Promoting points of agreement and law changes in favor of women in the Chamber of Deputies and Senators, generating STEM Education competency standards, achieving that the STEM Approach with a social and inclusive vision, today has official validity and is part of the New Mexican School. And very importantly, she has developed international recommendations that have allowed Mexico to be at the forefront in different global forums.
Building this dream has been a great challenge that has involved resilience and tireless work. For the entire STEM+ Movement team , composed mainly of women, we are very proud of what we have achieved because, in collaboration, we have promoted an intersectoral agenda in favor of talent in Latin America.
I am pleased to share our achievements:
We have integrated more than 220 alliances, giving life to the STEM Ecosystem in Mexico. It is not just a network, it is a joint commitment to education.
● Trained and created the Red Docentes en STEM community, bringing together more than 15,000 of Mexico's best STEM educators.
● More than 60,000 teenagers and youth had access to free vocational guidance, as well as STEM workshops with whom we built bridges to futures full of possibilities.
● During this year, we have promoted various volunteer strategies, bringing our cause to more than 600 people who have inspired educational communities to change the world.
Each number, each achievement, is more than a statistic. They are stories of lives changed, of minds motivated and with the desire to keep learning. This is the legacy of Movimiento STEM+ and that's why we celebrate it with you.
We want to continue developing the skills of the future, recognizing in each of our actions that talent has no gender, generating new narratives and demystifying stereotypes.
There is still much to do, let's keep working collaboratively to make STEM for everyone without leaving anyone behind.
