Just when we thought we were making progress on the issue of gender equality, the lords of power provide us with compelling examples that there is still a lot of ground to cover. They frequently use the title of the wife, the housewife, the big gray-haired woman to minimize the women who stand in their way: the ladies.

There is no doubt that Mexican women have had reason to celebrate in recent days. The Supreme Court upheld a woman's right to control her own body by legalizing abortion nationwide; this is especially important for women with less economic power. According to a study by Ipas Mexico, "criminalizing abortion does not prevent its practice, however, legal restriction does lead to unsafe or dangerous abortions and therefore to an increase in morbidity and mortality due to the lack of qualified providers and adequate hygienic conditions.

Women at the forefront of the debate, leading the way to a more inclusive and equitable dialogue. Here, diversity of thought and equitable representation across sectors are not mere ideals; they are the heart of our community.
