According to UNICEF, adolescence (which lasts approximately from 11 to 17 years of age) is a vital stage that represents a second opportunity to influence life trajectories, intervene in childhood experiences and promote comprehensive development (1).

There are many efforts for children in primary school and there are also important efforts for high school, since young people at this level represent the talent or possible talent required for employability, but what happens in secondary school?

Two out of every three Mexican students are below the minimum level in mathematics (2), according to the latest PISA test applied to teenagers 15-year-olds. Additionally, young people are not developing competencies such as creativity and critical thinking and are not getting informed and gender-sensitive vocational guidance.

It must be taken into account that students are in development (brain and body), consolidating their identity, choosing a path to high school, living social and educational deficiencies, in an environment with paradoxes, global/local and multidimensional (3).

However, high school is an excellent opportunity to develop STEM competencies and social-emotional skills so that teenagers can exercise full and globally responsible citizenship.

In Movimiento STEM+ we promote STEM Education by pathways and in secondary school it is fundamental:

● Experiential and collaborative learning

● Project-based learning

● Service-learning

● Internships in local businesses

● A strategy informed by local labor demand and with people with the right profile.

● A balanced curriculum and well-systematized work in STEM practices.

● Opportunities in which women can experience STEM Education in same-gender groups.

● For everyone, and those with neuro diversities manual activities in

makerspaces and tinkering spaces.

That is why we are launching the publication STEM Education and its application. An inclusive, sustainable and universal strategy for secondary school, as the next installment to the one presented for preschool and elementary school.

This publication is a free downloadable guide, made possible thanks to the commitment of the Lenovo Foundation and its distribution partners are Papalote Museo del Niño, the STEM+ Ecosystem and SEP's Undersecretary of Basic Education.

We want to inspire and accompany thousands of teachers at this educational level to continue transforming their pedagogical practice and, as UNICEF says, we take advantage of this second opportunity to achieve the integral development of students.

From Movimiento STEM+ we know that in collaboration we will be able to continue promoting the education of the future at every stage of development, leaving no one behind.
