The Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI) announced Tuesday that it is withdrawing from Mexico, arguing that its task is coming to an end because they failed to gain access to the Mexican Army's files to clarify the whereabouts of the 43 students from Ayotzinapa, who disappeared in September 2014. The experts considered that the lie about the Ayotzinapa case was institutionalized and that "there are no conditions to move forward".
The investigators concluded that the Army and Navy's reluctance to provide information has been the biggest obstacle they have faced and that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador "is aware" of the information requested and that which has not been provided by the Armed Forces.
"The evidence shows, the report presented by Angela Buitrago and Carlos Berastain remarks, that different authorities know what happened and have relevant information that has not been provided". Furthermore, they insist that they have evidence that the requested reports do exist, but they have refused to hand over these documents.
