On March 8 we do not celebrate, we fight. It is a day to remember the struggle of those who were, of those who are and of those who will come, an opportunity to vindicate women's rights and expand equal rights. Sometimes we forget how significant it is to go out to the streets and take them, to make them ours, a public space that for centuries was forbidden to us because we were only allowed to be in the private sphere without our voice being heard, where silence became an accomplice of oppression.
This 2025 takes on special relevance due to the global political and social context. In Mexico, it will be the first time in history that the demands in a march for the International Women's Day will be addressed to the President of the Republic, who in the first instance has decided to shield the National Palace with fences and this act reminds me of that letter written by the singer-songwriter Vivir Quintana for who would be the first woman President and I take up this scam: " For those who applaud you and support you, for those who observe and question you, for those who do not believe your time, for those who ignore you from pain, for all of you you will be one, for all of you you will be a companion". And these words reflect the longing of a President with her violet glasses on and for which the response of Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo is still expectant. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo because this time, unlike in previous years, the demands of mothers, daughters, sisters, friends and girls will be made directly to her administration.
There are still many questions: how will the women be treated? Will the police continue to gas, encapsulate and repress those who have decided to march? Will there be a response from the President? Will the President leave the National Palace? These will be answers that we will be waiting for and that will undoubtedly define a political stance for the next 5 years of government. As a feminist movement we just want to let you know that from walls we know how to build bridges.
