Mexico City, March 4, 2024.
To the public:
The journalists and communicators who accompany this message are concerned about the growing number of attacks of which our colleagues have been victims.
The climate of violence against journalists hinders the free development of freedom of expression and limits audiences' access to information. But the most serious form of violence has culminated in the murder of journalists. In 2023, Article 19 registered 561 aggressions against the press and the murder of 5 journalists. This climate of violence against the profession is not a practice exclusive to a single six-year term or political party, and we are concerned about its increase and even institutionalization.
We believe it is essential to clear the conversation of political noise and remember that in just 6 years, 43 journalists have been murdered in Mexico.
#CambiaElNúmero is a communication exercise by Opinión 51 to put the focus on what matters: the violence against the press that has increased dramatically since 2006.
Not adequately safeguarding journalists' personal data or displaying their phone number only puts them in a situation of greater vulnerability. Unlike phone numbers, fear, denunciations and lost lives are a number that cannot be changed.
We want this to stop,
#CambiaElNúmero, the one of violence.
