In early March, the cargo ship Melody arrived in Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo, from Cuba, with the first 20,000 tons of porphyrite stone, which will be crushed to be turned into ballast for the Tren Maya railroad tracks.

It was located in front of Puerto Morelos and lowered the anchor in a permitted area. But with the movement of the sea, the chain holding the anchor moved into the protected zone because there are coral reefs there and destroyed an important part of the reef.

The anchor chain affected coral reefs that are part of the Puerto Morelos Reefs National Park. This belongs to the Western Atlantic Great Barrier Reef Belt or Great Mayan Reef (the second largest barrier reef in the world), which belongs to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. This point is located in front of the Puerto Morelos dock, where the Melody ship was installed.
