My mother used to do stand up, drying her hands with her apron and leaning on the bronze railing of the wood stove, where she dried the dishes and heated the eternal kettle of the always-ready mate.

She had the ability to tell you in fifty different ways (one more bizarre than the other) the anecdote of how she won the Conscript Ball Beauty Pageant when her beau (ahem...my dad) bought all the raffle numbers for her crown.
