You've probably heard or read about the importance of having a clear purpose. However, when it comes to defining it, it's not always easy to know where to start.

A simple tool I recommend to define your purpose is the Ikigai. This is a Japanese concept that, according to Wikipedia, "has no literal translation, but can be defined as 'the reason for living' or 'the reason for being'; that which makes life worth living."

Suppose you manage to define your Ikigai . Many people stay with that definition and go back to their old ways, leaving their well-defined purpose in a locked drawer. What they do lacks real meaning and becomes automatic actions, patterns of the past.

My suggestion is that, once defined, you put intention in everything you do to align your actions with that purpose. Otherwise, what you execute throughout the day will get you nowhere because it lacks a clear focus.

Have you ever met people who say, "I can't make a living," "I'm crazy," "I can't stop," and then complain that they are not moving forward, that nothing new is happening in their lives? Most of them, when asked, are not clear about where they are going and what their purpose is.

These people often complain and react to what is not happening in their lives, they feel exhausted because they do not stop, but they are dissatisfied and frustrated because they do not achieve success. However, they rarely analyze that the word "success" is ambiguous. Closing a sale is a success, getting a project accepted is a success, but it doesn't necessarily take you to the next level.

When faced with obstacles or setbacks, many people throw in the towel because the difficulty seems insurmountable. But if they were clear about their purpose, they would see those obstacles as mere stumbling blocks that could slow down the path, but not make it impossible. Being clear about where you want to go allows you to keep trying, to look for resources, new paths, and to avoid distractions or the temptation to constantly change goals in search of immediate satisfaction.

Putting intentionality into your actions allows you to focus them towards your purpose, ensuring that what you do takes you to the next level, with full awareness of the impact you want to generate. In this way, we will stop feeling like we are going aimlessly.

If you are looking to reinforce your leadership techniques, influence, power communication, negotiations or require support in entrepreneurship and reinvention, I invite you to participate in the LiderA Forum by Ale Marroquín.
